TLDR Onions may help reduce cancer risk and obesity-related issues.
The review discussed the therapeutic benefits of Allium species, particularly onions, in treating various diseases with minimal side effects. It highlighted that consumption of Allium vegetables was associated with a decreased risk of cancers, especially gastrointestinal tract cancers, supported by mechanistic studies. These studies showed that sulfur compounds and onion extracts could lower carcinogen activation and possess antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties. Additionally, onions were noted for their potential in reducing obesity by lowering low-density cholesterol and increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, thereby reducing obesity-related cancer risks.
