TLDR Onion oil may improve hair health and regrowth.
The review article discusses the potential benefits of onion (Allium cepa L.)-derived preparations, such as onion juice and oil, for scalp and hair wellness. These preparations are rich in phytochemicals, including sulfur compounds, flavonoids, vitamins, and trace minerals, which may improve hair regrowth in patchy alopecia areata, reduce scalp microbial load, and support follicular health through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The proposed mechanisms include enhanced microcirculation, nutrient delivery to hair bulbs, keratin synthesis support, and antimicrobial activity. However, the efficacy and tolerability of these treatments are influenced by formulation factors like concentration and extraction methods. The review highlights the need for standardized extracts and more controlled clinical trials to validate these findings and guide future development.
