TLDR Onion oil may help hair regrowth and scalp health, but more research is needed.
Onion-derived preparations, such as onion juice and oil, are being studied for their potential benefits in scalp and hair wellness due to their rich phytochemical content. These preparations have shown promise in improving hair regrowth in patchy alopecia areata, reducing scalp microbial load, and supporting follicular health through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The active compounds in onions may enhance microcirculation, support keratin synthesis, and provide antimicrobial benefits. However, the efficacy and tolerability of these treatments depend on formulation factors, and there is a need for standardized extracts and more controlled clinical trials. This review highlights the current evidence, identifies gaps, and suggests priorities for future research in onion-based hair therapeutics.
