TLDR The role of antibodies in alopecia is unclear, but JAK inhibitors show promise for treatment.
This narrative review examines the uncertain role of autoantibodies in the development of alopecia, particularly alopecia areata, by exploring the involvement of autoantigens from hair follicle components and the collapse of hair follicle immune privilege. It highlights the potential of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors in treating alopecia areata and discusses associations with antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and thyroid autoantibodies, especially in the context of COVID-19. Despite these insights, the precise role of specific antigens remains unclear, underscoring the need for further research to identify key autoantigens and develop targeted immunotherapies. The review also compares different types of alopecia, emphasizing the complexity of these disorders and the necessity for more research to understand their mechanisms and improve treatments.
