TLDR Hair loss after bariatric surgery is common due to nutrient deficiencies and rapid weight loss.
Telogen Effluvium (TE) is a common issue after bariatric surgery, particularly in women, due to nutrient deficiencies and rapid weight loss. A review conducted in July 2023 found that hair loss is linked to deficiencies in zinc, iron, proteins, vitamin B12, and folic acid, as well as stress and restrictive diets. The study emphasizes the importance of monitoring and addressing these nutritional needs post-surgery, suggesting that supplementation with zinc, vitamins C and D, and medications can help. However, more randomized studies are needed to further understand and manage TE in these patients.

Minoxidil is discouraged due to its cost and potential for worsening hair loss, while castor oil is recommended to strengthen hair roots and reduce shedding.
