TLDR Low vitamin D levels are linked to symptoms like muscle cramps, fatigue, and hair loss.
In a 2018 study involving 201 female Saudi Arabian patients, researchers aimed to correlate various symptoms with serum vitamin D levels. The study, which had an average participant age of 55.9 years and a mean vitamin D level of 21.8 ng/ml, found that symptoms such as muscle cramps, fatigue, mood swings, hair loss, back pain, and weight gain were more prevalent in the 92 patients (49.19%) with vitamin D deficiency. Additionally, 48 patients (25.6%) reported fractures. Despite the small sample size and a margin of error of ±7.19% at a 95% confidence interval, the study suggested that these symptoms are indeed associated with low vitamin D levels and highlighted the potential for correcting these symptoms to improve health. The study also called for further research with larger sample sizes to validate the findings, as it was one of the first to attempt to correlate all symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. Notably, the study did not receive any funding.
