TLDR Most patients with blistering skin disorders in South India had bullous pemphigoid and often had other conditions like hypertension and diabetes.
The study analyzed the demographic, clinical, and histopathological characteristics of 69 patients with subepidermal blistering disorders in South India. The average age of the patients was 55 years, with a standard deviation of 18 years. The most common disorder was bullous pemphigoid, found in 50 patients. Other disorders included epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, bullous lupus erythematosus, mucous membrane pemphigoid, and linear IgA bullous dermatoses. Seventeen patients had hypertension, 16 had diabetes mellitus, 16 had osteopenia or osteoporosis, and six had hypothyroidism. Histopathology of bullous pemphigoid patients revealed subepidermal bulla with mixed inflammatory cells including eosinophils. Direct immunofluorescence tests for IgG and C3 were positive in most bullous pemphigoid patients, while tests for IgA were mostly negative.
