TLDR Oral minipulse therapy with betamethasone effectively promotes hair regrowth in alopecia areata with fewer side effects.
A study conducted on 46 patients with alopecia areata evaluated the effectiveness of oral minipulse therapy using 3 mg betamethasone administered on 2 consecutive days per week. The results showed that 67.4% of patients experienced significant hair regrowth, with side effects including acne (14 patients), weight gain (11 patients), gastrointestinal discomfort (6 patients), and facial flushing or edema (5 patients). Nineteen patients reported no side effects. The study concluded that this treatment modality was effective in arresting the progression of alopecia areata and inducing hair regrowth, with fewer and less severe side effects compared to traditional pulse therapy with methylprednisolone.
