TLDR Eclipta alba extract is generally safe with mild liver and kidney changes at high doses.
The study assessed the sub-acute toxicity of Eclipta alba extract in 60 Wistar rats over 28 days, with doses of up to 800 mg/kg body weight. No mortality or significant clinical toxicity signs were observed, and there were no notable differences in hematological and biochemical parameters compared to controls, except for mild changes in creatinine and serum glutamate oxidase transferase levels. Histopathological examination showed normal organ features, with some unrelated mild lung and kidney changes. The study concludes that E. alba extract is safe at the tested doses, supporting its use in herbal formulations, though higher doses may pose hepatotoxic risks. The NOAEL was determined to be 800 mg/kg b.w/day.
