TLDR Eclipta prostrata has many traditional uses and health benefits, but more research is needed to understand how it works and ensure it's safe.
The 2019 review article provides an extensive examination of Eclipta prostrata, a plant used in traditional medicine, detailing its traditional applications, chemical constituents, and pharmacological effects. The plant has been used to treat a variety of health issues, including hair loss, skin and respiratory disorders, and liver and kidney diseases. Phytochemical studies have identified compounds such as triterpenes, flavonoids, thiopenes, coumestans, and steroids, with coumestans being particularly notable. Pharmacological research has shown that E. prostrata has hepatoprotective, osteoprotective, cytotoxic, hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, hypolipidemic, hair growth-promoting, rejuvenative, and neuroprotective properties. However, the review emphasizes the need for more in-depth studies to fully understand the mechanisms of action and to confirm safety before the plant can be used clinically. The review also points out that while some traditional uses are supported by scientific evidence, further research is required to discover new active molecules and to validate the antioxidant activity of the plant in human health.
