TLDR The medulla in Asian scalp hair has a tubular structure that allows ions and large molecules to flow through it.
The study investigated the structure and material flow properties of the medulla in Asian scalp hair. It found that the medulla consisted of two types of surrounding cells forming a tubular structure, with drum-shaped vesicles containing proteinous granules stored within. H+ and OH- ions could move spontaneously through the medulla tube, and large molecules like anthocyanin dye could flow through it, especially rapidly when DC voltage was applied. The findings suggested a potential function of the medulla related to its tubular structure and material flow properties.
