TLDR Steatocystoma multiplex causes recurring skin cysts and needs early recognition for better management.
Steatocystoma multiplex (SM) is a rare, benign skin condition marked by multiple sebaceous cysts, often appearing in areas with many pilosebaceous units. It is linked to mutations in the keratin 17 gene and can be sporadic or inherited. SM is associated with conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa. Diagnosis is confirmed via histopathology, but treatment options typically lead to poor outcomes and frequent recurrences. Early recognition and counseling are important to address the psychological effects of the disease.
