TLDR A man got a scalp infection from synthetic hair implants because the procedure wasn't done by a doctor and was poorly managed.
In 2017, a 39-year-old man developed a scalp infection caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis and Trichophyton tonsurans after receiving synthetic hair implants. The procedure was performed by a hair stylist, not a medical professional, and despite persistent symptoms, the patient did not seek medical assistance. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery emphasized that synthetic hair implantation should be performed by licensed medical doctors due to potential complications such as infection, often due to lack of asepsis, poor patient hygiene, excessive quantity and density of implanted fibers, incorrect choice of implant area, and inadequate aftercare. If implant-related problems persist beyond 15 days of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment, an extended microbiological work-up is necessary, potentially including removal of the fibers.
