TLDR Spironolactone may be effective for acne and other skin conditions and could be used more in treatment.
Spironolactone, an aldosterone receptor antagonist with anti-androgenic effects, has shown potential in treating various dermatological conditions, although its use is not widely explored. It has been effective in treating acne, potentially serving as a first-line treatment. Other conditions where spironolactone has shown beneficial effects include hidradenitis suppurativa, hirsutism, and female pattern androgenetic alopecia. This review discusses the use of spironolactone in these common skin diseases, including dosage recommendations, treatment guidelines, and potential adverse effects, with the aim of incorporating this drug into daily clinical practice.
