TLDR Indian women with PCOS may need different ultrasound criteria for diagnosis than current standards.
The study compared ovarian morphology in 119 Indian women with PCOS and 77 healthy women using ultrasound. It found that the cut-off values for ovarian volume and follicle count used to diagnose PCOS in the Indian population differed from those established by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Specifically, a cut-off of 9 follicles per ovary had a sensitivity of 82.35% and specificity of 92.0%, but 100% specificity was only achieved with a cut-off of 19 follicles or an ovarian volume of 16 mL. The study concluded that the standard definition of PCOS does not accurately classify many Indian women with the condition and that combining multiple sonographic criteria could improve diagnostic accuracy. However, the study was limited by the use of transabdominal sonography and did not correlate findings with insulin resistance or hormone levels. This research suggests a need for more accurate ultrasound criteria for PCOS diagnosis in Indian women.
