TLDR PCOS is a major cause of infertility in women of childbearing age.
This systematic review analyzed data from 10 studies involving 3,900 women aged 10 to 40 and found that Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a significant cause of infertility, accounting for 70% of anovulatory infertility cases. The review highlights the necessity of early screening and treatment for PCOS in primary care, with transvaginal sonography (TVS) being the most effective diagnostic tool. It also points out specific ultrasound features that are indicative of PCOS. The review further references several studies that demonstrate the high prevalence of PCOS among women with infertility, with percentages ranging from 16.7% to 72% in different cohorts. The complexity of PCOS, characterized by symptoms such as high testosterone levels, irregular menstruation, and ovarian cysts, is emphasized, along with its profound impact on women's reproductive health.
