TLDR Scalp micropigmentation effectively treats localized alopecia with high patient satisfaction.
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is shown to be an effective and safe treatment for localized alopecia, as demonstrated in a study involving 10 patients with either androgenetic (n=6) or scarring alopecia (n=4). The study utilized a standardized three-session SMP protocol with technical refinements such as zone-specific needle selection and hierarchical pigment deposition. Results indicated significant cosmetic improvement, with an immediate posttreatment visual density score (VDS) averaging 8.7 out of 10, and a high patient satisfaction score (PSS) of 2.7 out of 3. Although there was a modest decline in VDS at the 6-month follow-up, particularly in scarring alopecia cases, patient satisfaction remained high. No adverse events were reported, suggesting SMP as a minimally invasive and effective solution for localized alopecia. Future research should explore long-term pigment retention and larger patient cohorts.
