TLDR The smart bandage improved healing in diabetic wounds better than standard treatments.
The study developed a smart bandage equipped with miniaturized needle arrays and a wirelessly-controlled drug delivery system to treat chronic wounds, particularly in diabetic patients. This innovative platform allowed for the programmable delivery of various drugs directly into deeper layers of the wound bed, addressing the need for different pharmacological agents at different stages of tissue regeneration. The research demonstrated that delivering vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) using this system significantly improved wound closure, re-epithelialization, angiogenesis, and hair growth in chronic dermal wounds of diabetic mice compared to standard topical treatments. This highlighted the importance of both the choice of therapeutics and the method of delivery in effective wound healing.
