TLDR Adults with Beta Thalassemia Major are more likely to have skin, hair, and nail disorders.
The study "Analysis of Skin, Hair and Nail Diseases in the Adults with Beta Thalassemia Major" conducted by Suzan Demir Pektas et al., involved 71 patients with Beta Thalassemia Major (BTM) and 50 healthy individuals. The researchers found that 45.1% of the BTM patients had hair disorders, compared to 4.2% in the control group. Similarly, 36.6% of the BTM patients had nail diseases, compared to 8.3% in the control group. The most common skin, hair, and nail disorders among BTM patients were xerosis (93%), telogen effluvium (22.5%), and dystrophic nail (12.7%), respectively. The study concluded that age, gender, medication history, and ferritin level are significant factors for the development of dermatological disorders among BTM patients.

Saw palmetto can help reduce DHT levels and may work in combination with other supplements like beta sitosterol and pygume, but it's less effective than finasteride. Additional treatments like pumpkin seed extract, zinc, biotin, essential oils, scalp massages, and micro-needling can support hair health, but should not replace existing treatments like finasteride.
