TLDR Alfredo Rebora suggested a new, easier way to classify hair loss in Telogen Effluvium, adding a type possibly related to autoimmune diseases.
In 2016, Alfredo Rebora proposed a new, simpler classification system for Telogen Effluvium (TE), a common hair loss condition. The existing classifications, which divided TE into acute and chronic forms or used Headington's five pathogenetic mechanisms, were deemed too complex for clinical practice. Rebora's classification identified three pathogenetic types: premature teloptosis, collective teloptosis, and premature entry into the telogen phase. Additionally, a new variety of TE potentially linked to autoimmune diseases was introduced. The author acknowledged the heterogeneity of TE and the need for a straightforward classification to improve understanding and treatment. While the acute and chronic distinction was maintained, Rebora suggested that chronicity might be specific to certain types and called for more research to clarify various clinical aspects of TE.
