    GlossaryAcute Telogen Effluvium

sudden, excessive hair shedding due to stress or illness

Acute Telogen Effluvium (acute TE) is a condition characterized by sudden, excessive hair shedding that typically occurs a few months after a triggering event, such as severe stress, illness, or hormonal changes. This condition results when a large number of hair follicles prematurely enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair growth cycle, leading to noticeable hair thinning. While it can be alarming, acute TE is usually temporary, and hair often regrows once the underlying cause is addressed.
