TLDR Certain changes in the SHBG gene may increase the risk of PCOS in Iraqi women.
The study investigated the association between the SHBG gene polymorphism (rs1799941) and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in 70 Iraqi women. It found that the heterozygous GA genotype, present in 44 participants, had an odds ratio (OR) of 12.833, suggesting it is a significant risk factor for PCOS. Similarly, the homozygous mutant AA genotype, found in 22 participants, had an OR of 9.250, also indicating it as a risk factor. Only 4 women carried the normal homozygous GG genotype. The higher frequency of the A allele in the PCOS group compared to the control group suggests that this allele is associated with an increased risk of developing PCOS. These results support the hypothesis that the SHBG gene polymorphism (rs1799941) is linked to the occurrence of PCOS in the studied population.
