TLDR Certain SHBG gene variants, like rs727428, are linked to higher testosterone levels in women with PCOS.
The study examined the relationship between SHBG gene variants and SHBG levels in 242 women with PCOS and 238 control women. It found significant associations between certain SHBG gene variants, particularly the rs727428 minor allele, and PCOS. Women with PCOS carrying this allele had increased levels of free and bioactive testosterone but no change in insulin resistance or serum lipids. The study also identified haplotypes that may influence susceptibility to PCOS. Despite the small sample size and focus on a specific ethnic group, the findings suggest that SHBG gene variants, especially rs727428, could contribute to the development of PCOS.
