Sexuality in Patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Beliefs, Behaviors and Needs

    Carlos Cuenca‐Barrales, Alejandro Molina‐Leyva
TLDR Hidradenitis suppurativa negatively affects patients' sexual lives and relationships, highlighting the need for better support and communication about sexual health.
The study investigated the impact of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) on the sexuality of 386 patients, revealing significant negative effects on their sexual lives and relationships. Nearly half of the participants feared rejection and felt less attractive, with pain and suppuration being major issues affecting sexual relations. HS negatively influenced relationships for 71.4% of those in stable partnerships, with women receiving more emotional support and men more practical help. Single patients, particularly women, experienced more fear of rejection. The study emphasized the need for healthcare providers to address sexual health issues in HS management, as many patients were reluctant to discuss these concerns with healthcare providers but were open to consulting psychologists or sexologists.
