TLDR The consensus document recommends a comprehensive treatment plan for Hidradenitis Suppurativa, including various medications, surgery, lifestyle changes, and the need for more research and resources.
The 2017 consensus document provided a comprehensive approach to managing Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), a chronic skin condition. It included recommendations on diagnosis, treatment, comorbidities, and education, based on a modified Delphi technique with a 75% agreement threshold. The document reported the effectiveness of various treatments, such as topical clindamycin in mild HS (n = 27), topical resorcinol in 12 women, intralesional steroid injections, systemic antibiotics with response rates of 71% to 93%, antiandrogens and metformin for mild to moderate HS, and acitretin with a 65.7% improvement rate. Biologics, especially adalimumab, were effective in two large phase III trials (PIONEER I and II) involving 326 patients. Surgery was recommended after medical stabilization, and pain management was emphasized. Lifestyle changes were also suggested. The document called for multidisciplinary management, more research, and better resources for HS treatment.
