TLDR Finasteride with lifestyle changes effectively treats acne in males by improving hormone levels and reducing recurrence.
The study observed sex hormone levels in 40 adolescent male acne patients with normal serum testosterone and evaluated the effect of antiandrogen therapy using finasteride combined with lifestyle intervention. Compared to 40 healthy controls, acne patients had higher body fat content, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), free testosterone (FT), estradiol (E2), and lower sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels. The treatment group showed a 90% overall effective rate, significantly higher than the 25% in the control group, and maintained an 85% effective rate 3 months post-treatment. The treatment significantly decreased DHT and FT levels and increased SHBG levels, with no severe adverse effects reported. The study concluded that finasteride plus lifestyle intervention was effective in treating acne in these patients, improving hormone levels and reducing recurrence after drug withdrawal.
