TLDR Certain N-glycans may help assess hair loss severity in men with female-pattern hair loss.
This study investigated the serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) N-glycan profiles in 85 male patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA), including 44 with male-pattern hair loss (MPHL) and 41 with female-pattern hair loss (FPHL). The research found significant differences in the N-glycan profiles between the two groups. FPHL patients had higher levels of certain N-glycans (GP5, GP11, GP17, GP20) and afucosylated IgG N-glycans, but lower levels of core fucosylated IgG N-glycans compared to MPHL patients. Additionally, N-glycans GP10 and GP22 were correlated with hair loss severity in FPHL patients, suggesting their potential as biomarkers for early assessment of hair loss severity. No significant differences were found in IgG N-glycan composition among MPHL patients with varying severity grades.
