TLDR Low iron levels are strongly linked to chronic hair loss in women.
This study of 140 females aged 18-45 years found a strong association between low serum ferritin levels and chronic diffuse alopecia, including Chronic Telogen Effluvium (CTE) and Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL). Specifically, 92.9% of those with hair loss had ferritin levels below 30 ng/ml, and a significant portion had levels below 12 ng/ml, indicating iron deficiency. The findings suggest the importance of monitoring and potentially supplementing ferritin in affected individuals before starting other treatments. The study was ethically approved and supported by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh.
