TLDR Low iron levels are linked to hair loss in women.
A case-control study conducted from 2008 to 2010 involving 60 women found a significant association between low iron levels and telogen effluvium, a form of hair loss. The study showed that women with hair loss had significantly lower mean serum ferritin levels (18.8±8.1 g/L) and hemoglobin levels (11.5±1.4 gm/dl) compared to those without hair loss (36.6±9.9 mg/L and 12.8±1.1 gm/dl respectively). Despite some conflicting results from previous research, the study concluded that assessing hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels could be useful in evaluating hair loss in women, and recommended further large-scale research.
