TLDR Low levels of iron and vitamin D might be linked to chronic hair loss in women.
This cross-sectional study conducted on 60 adult females with chronic telogen effluvium (CTE), a form of hair loss, and 60 healthy females, found that those with CTE had significantly lower levels of serum ferritin and vitamin D. The study, conducted at the outpatient Department of Dermatology and Venereology in Al-kindy Teaching Hospital between March and November 2017, suggests that these reduced levels may be associated with the hair loss seen in CTE. The study also found that hemoglobin levels were not significantly different between the two groups, suggesting that hemoglobin level measurement should not be the sole factor considered in the assessment of hair loss.
