TLDR A new method was created to analyze certain chemicals in the urine of alopecia areata patients, revealing they have higher metanephrine content. This method can also be used for other related diseases.
The study developed a method for simultaneous analysis of catecholamines and steroids in urine samples of patients with alopecia areata. The method involved serial hydrolysis, ethyl acetate extractions, and chemical derivatization. The method's accuracy and precision were validated, with intra-day and inter-day precisions ranging from 0.4% to 21.5% and 2.0% to 21.6% respectively. The method was applied to 29 normal controls and 40 alopecia areata patients, revealing significantly higher metanephrine content in the alopecia areata group. This method can also be applied to other steroid-dependent and catecholamine-related diseases.
