TLDR Lupus patients' body image issues significantly affect their mental health and need more support.
The systematic review summarized evidence on body image in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, focusing on their perceptions of body changes, coping mechanisms, and overall perceptions. Analyzing 22 studies from 647 identified, the review found that body image changes, such as hair loss and weight gain, significantly impacted patients' mental health, leading to depression and anxiety. The study highlighted the need for these issues to be addressed with the same importance as physical disabilities and pain. It identified three main themes: the psychological impact of body changes, the reflection of the disease in body image, and the need for interventions to help patients accept and adapt to their new image. The review concluded that self-concept and body image are crucial for assessing the quality of life in lupus patients, and health professionals should support the formation of an adjusted self-concept.
