TLDR Balanced selenium intake from wheat is crucial for preventing hair loss.
The review article examines the role of selenium, a trace element in wheat, in hair health, emphasizing its importance in selenoproteins that regulate oxidative stress, immune responses, and endocrine functions. Both deficiency and excess of selenium can lead to hair loss, as shown by studies in selenium-deficient areas and cases of toxicity like in Buldhana, India. The article suggests biofortifying wheat with selenium to improve hair health but stresses the need for careful monitoring to prevent toxicity. The study highlights the significance of selenium from wheat in overall intake and suggests public health strategies like biofortification to address deficiencies, while maintaining a balance to avoid toxicity. No financial support or conflicts of interest were reported.
