TLDR Cerasus serrulata flower extracts have strong antibacterial and antioxidant effects and may help prevent hair loss.
The study examined the chemical composition and bioactivity of Cerasus serrulata flower extracts, obtained through two methods: low-temperature vacuum extraction and ethanol extraction. The extracts were rich in alkanes and aromatic compounds, with benzaldehyde being the main component in the cold vacuum extraction and pipecolic acid in the ethanol extract. The extracts demonstrated strong antibacterial properties and excellent free radical scavenging ability. In a mouse model of alopecia, the extracts significantly altered protein levels in the skin, inhibited Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) reduction, increased β-catenin, Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor (FGFR), and Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) gene expression, and reduced 5α-reductase and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The study suggests that C. serrulata extract could be beneficial as natural antioxidative, antibacterial, and anti-alopecia agents.
