Scar Classification in Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus: Morphological Description

    Khitam Al‐Refu, Mark Goodfield
TLDR Early scar classification in lupus can improve treatment and patient outcomes.
This study aimed to classify scars in 45 patients with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) based on their morphology and anatomical location. Scars were categorized into six types and further divided into subtypes. Scarring predominantly affected the scalp, eyebrows, nonhairy areas, mucosa, fatty skin layers, and nails, causing both textural and pigmentary changes. The findings suggested that early classification of scars could lead to more aggressive and tailored treatments for ongoing disease activity, potentially improving patient outcomes.
