TLDR An unhealthy scalp can damage new hair, but using ZPT shampoo can improve hair health.
The study investigated the impact of oxidative stress from an unhealthy scalp on the cuticle integrity of pre-emergent hair. Conducted over 24 weeks, it involved 8 weeks of pretreatment with a cosmetic shampoo followed by 16 weeks of treatment with either a potentiated zinc pyrithione (ZPT) antidandruff shampoo or a placebo. Results showed that oxidative stress negatively affected hair surface structure, but the ZPT shampoo improved scalp health and significantly enhanced hair surface hydrophobicity and cuticular moisture barrier effectiveness. The findings suggested that oxidative stress from an unhealthy scalp could alter cuticle properties, making hair more vulnerable to damage.

The conversation discusses alternative hair loss treatments beyond the commonly used Minoxidil and Finasteride. One user is trying diclofenac gel, caffeine + antioxidant serum, finasteride, ketoconazole shampoo, and has stopped using Minoxidil due to ineffectiveness, while another user has adopted lifestyle changes like exercise, diet, stress reduction, and topical caffeine, along with scalp massages and microneedling.

The mechanism of Androgenic Alopecia and practical applications of treatments like Minoxidil, Finasteride, RU58841, dermarolling, scalp massages, anti-fungals, progesterone, estrogen, PPAR-γ activators, reducing oxidative stress, and scalp exercises. It explains why DHT is important in AA and how other factors might be involved such as hypoxia, increased DKK-1 expression, morphological changes to the scalp, skull growth during childhood/puberty, and blood flow.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
