Morphological, Molecular, and Histopathological Identification of Sarcoptes Scabiei Infection in a Goat Herd at Goa, India

    This study investigated a severe mange outbreak in a goat herd in North Goa, India, identifying Sarcoptes scabiei as the causative pathogen through clinical signs, histopathology, and genetic characterization. Affected goats exhibited symptoms like pruritus, erythema, papules, alopecia, and scabs, primarily on the head and neck. The study confirmed the presence of S. scabiei through PCR and 16s rRNA sequencing, revealing its close phylogenetic relation to isolates from various countries. Treatment with Ivermectin and other medications resulted in complete recovery. The research highlights the prevalence of S. scabiei in Goa's goat population and underscores the need for preventive measures against this zoonotic pathogen in the region.
