TLDR The combination of spironolactone and low-dose minoxidil is generally safe for treating hair loss in adult females, with mostly mild side effects.
The study assessed the safety and tolerability of combining oral spironolactone and low-dose oral minoxidil for treating hair loss in 432 adult females. It found that 37.7% of patients experienced adverse effects, with hypertrichosis (12.3%) and dizziness/lightheadedness/orthostasis (12.0%) being the most common. Simultaneous initiation of the drugs reduced the risk of hypertrichosis by 64.8%, while the use of more than one additional blood pressure-altering medication increased the risk of orthostatic effects. Most adverse effects were mild and managed on an outpatient basis, and the study concluded that the combination therapy is generally safe, though it lacked a control group.
