TLDR Laparoscopic surgery is safe and effective for colon cancer, with benefits like less blood loss and shorter hospital stays.
The study compared laparoscopic resection to open surgery for treating right or left colon cancer in 1,279 patients. It found that laparoscopic surgery resulted in less blood loss, required fewer analgesics, and led to a shorter hospital stay, despite taking 30 minutes longer than open surgery. Conversion to open surgery was necessary for 19% of laparoscopic cases. There was no significant difference in the number of excised lymph nodes, length of resected bowel, or mortality risk one month post-surgery between the two groups. Overall, laparoscopic surgery was deemed safe and effective for removing cancer from the colon.
