TLDR Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery leads to fewer severe complications and better quality of life than immediate surgery in advanced ovarian cancer patients with high tumor load.
The SCORPION trial compared primary debulking surgery (PDS) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS) in 110 women with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer and high tumor load. The NACT/IDS group had significantly fewer severe perioperative complications (5.7% vs. 52.7%) and better quality of life scores than the PDS group. The study concluded that NACT/IDS was associated with lower morbidity and better quality of life, suggesting careful assessment of PDS in these patients, with further analysis needed for overall survival efficacy.
