TLDR Topical ruxolitinib and oral minoxidil together can regrow hair in certain types of hair loss.
A 55-year-old woman with central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) and traction alopecia (TA) showed significant hair regrowth after 6 months of treatment with topical ruxolitinib, a JAK1/2 inhibitor, combined with oral minoxidil. This case suggests that topical JAK inhibitors could be a promising treatment for scarring alopecias like CCCA and TA, particularly when traditional treatments are ineffective. The study indicates the JAK/STAT pathway's significant role in CCCA's pathophysiology and proposes that topical JAK inhibitors might be a safer alternative to oral treatments, which carry immunosuppression risks. Further research is necessary to validate these findings and assess the effectiveness of topical JAK inhibitors for scarring alopecias.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.
