    The 1998 study investigated the effects of RU58841, a nonsteroidal anti-androgen, on human prostate cancer PC3 cells and its potential as a topical treatment for androgenetic alopecia. The study found that RU58841 had a potency comparable to hydroxyflutamide, a treatment for prostate cancer. Topical application of RU58841 significantly increased hair density, thickness, and length in the Stumptailed Macaques model of androgenetic alopecia, with no systemic side effects detected. The study also noted an increased population and overall size of anagen follicles (active hair growth phase) 5 months after treatment. These results suggested that RU58841 could potentially be an effective topical treatment for androgen-dependent skin disorders, including androgenetic alopecia. However, as the study was conducted on a non-human model, further research would be needed to confirm its effects on humans.
