TLDR Adding Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to hair transplants can speed up recovery and increase hair density, but it doesn't help with androgenic alopecia.
In a prospective randomized controlled study conducted in 2020 among 40 patients suffering from alopecia, the researchers assessed the role of Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplantation. The study found that adding PRP to FUE hair transplantation resulted in functional and aesthetic outcomes, particularly in cases of post cicatricial alopecia. The benefits included early recovery time and increased hair density. However, there was no statistical difference observed in patients with androgenic alopecia. Therefore, the study concluded that PRP therapy after hair transplantation is beneficial in providing faster hair density and reducing the recovery period in cases of post cicatricial alopecia, but it does not benefit FUE hair transplantation in cases with androgenic alopecia.
