TLDR Metformin helps reduce PCOS-related infertility by improving insulin sensitivity and inducing ovulation.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and insulin resistance (IR). This review highlights that metformin, a medication used to treat PCOS, significantly reduces serum androgen levels, improves insulin sensitivity, restores menstrual cycles, and induces ovulation, thereby addressing PCOS-related infertility. The review also aims to elucidate the prevalence of PCOS, particularly in Saudi Arabia, its pathogenesis, and the overall impact on patient health, while detailing metformin's mechanism of action and therapeutic benefits.
