TLDR Certain medications and smaller pupil size increase the risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during eye surgery.
The study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) during phacoemulsification in a Chinese hospital. Among 807 patients (1,068 eyes), IFIS was observed in 34 eyes, indicating an incidence rate of 3.18%. The study found strong positive correlations between IFIS and the use of medications such as finasteride, tamsulosin, reserpine, and clozapine, as well as post-panretinal photocoagulation. A dilated pupil size smaller than 7.25 mm was predictive of IFIS, with pupil size inversely related to its incidence. Reserpine, clozapine, and post-panretinal photocoagulation were identified as new risk factors for IFIS.
