In a study conducted by Shiseido Global Innovation Center in Japan, retinol (RO) was found to be remarkably effective in reducing neck wrinkles. The study was a randomized placebo-controlled double-blinded trial involving 84 Japanese female subjects selected from an initial group of 152. These subjects applied either a retinol formulation (RF) or a placebo formulation (PF) to their face and neck twice daily for 12 weeks. The severity of neck wrinkles was assessed every four weeks using visual assessment (VA) and instrument analysis (IA). Results showed that RF significantly improved neck wrinkles after 8 weeks compared to PF, as determined by both VA and IA. Additionally, ultrasonic image analysis suggested that retinol markedly increased the extracellular matrix component of the dermis. This clinical study demonstrated that retinol not only improved crow's feet but also neck wrinkles and increased the extracellular matrix.
