TLDR Tretinoin alone is more effective than combined with microdermabrasion for long-term alopecia areata treatment.
The study conducted a randomized trial on 38 patients with alopecia areata, divided into two groups. Group A was treated with tretinoin 0.05% cream alone, while Group B received microdermabrasion (MDA) in addition to the tretinoin cream. The results showed that the mean growth percentage index (GPI) and visual analogue scale (VAS) were significantly higher in Group B at 2 weeks and 8 weeks. However, the study concluded that tretinoin was more effective than the combination with MDA. This suggests that while the combination treatment may initially show more promising results, tretinoin alone may be more effective in the long term for treating alopecia areata.

Tretinoin combined with minoxidil may improve hair regrowth, especially in difficult areas like temples, but requires diligent scalp cleaning. Some users suggest oral minoxidil as a more potent and less irritating alternative.

Combining tretinoin with minoxidil may enhance hair growth when minoxidil alone becomes less effective. Apply tretinoin, wait 40 minutes, then apply minoxidil, and avoid sun exposure.

Tretinoin may enhance minoxidil absorption, potentially improving hair regrowth when combined with microneedling. Users discuss various treatments like minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride, and microneedling, with mixed results and concerns about side effects and scarring.

Tretinoin can cause non-telogen hair loss in some men by inducing catagen-like changes in hair follicles and through retinoid toxicity, especially when used with minoxidil. Some users report hair loss even when using retinoids on the face, while others experience benefits when combined with treatments like finasteride and minoxidil.
