TLDR Tretinoin alone is more effective than combined with microdermabrasion for long-term alopecia areata treatment.
The study conducted a randomized trial on 38 patients with alopecia areata, divided into two groups. Group A was treated with tretinoin 0.05% cream alone, while Group B received microdermabrasion (MDA) in addition to the tretinoin cream. The results showed that the mean growth percentage index (GPI) and visual analogue scale (VAS) were significantly higher in Group B at 2 weeks and 8 weeks. However, the study concluded that tretinoin was more effective than the combination with MDA. This suggests that while the combination treatment may initially show more promising results, tretinoin alone may be more effective in the long term for treating alopecia areata.
