TLDR Selenium imbalance can cause hair loss and skin issues.
The study investigated the effects of selenium (Se) imbalance on hair follicles using 15 C57BL/6 mice, which were fed diets with excessive, adequate, or deficient Se levels. Both excessive and deficient Se intake led to alopecia with poliosis, characterized by increased telogen hair follicles and epidermal atrophy. The excessive-Se group showed a significant decrease in anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and an increase in pro-apoptotic Bax compared to the adequate group. The findings suggested that Se imbalance disrupted the hair follicle cycle, leading to alopecia, and was partially influenced by the altered Bcl-2/Bax ratio, promoting keratinocyte apoptosis.
