TLDR Raman spectroscopy is promising for measuring and enhancing drug delivery in alopecia treatments.
The study "Raman spectroscopy of alopecia drugs to assess their potential for laser-assisted drug delivery" explores the use of Raman spectroscopy (RS) in assessing the efficacy of laser-assisted drug delivery (LADD) for alopecia areata (AA) treatments. RS, a technique that uses laser light scattering to measure vibrational spectra, provides a "chemical fingerprint" of small molecules, allowing for the analysis of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic profiles of topical drugs without the need for extrinsic stains or fluorescent labels. Preliminary experiments on pure powders of minoxidil, triamcinolone, and tofacitinib showed that RS could reliably differentiate between these drugs and their vehicles. The findings suggest that RS is a promising tool for measuring the efficacy of LADD in enhancing alopecia topical drug penetration, and it has potential as a visualization technique in the topical pharmaceutical industry.
