TLDR Androgenetic alopecia is linked to higher cholesterol in both sexes and obesity in women.
This study investigates the association between androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and cardiometabolic comorbidities using data from the All of Us Research Program, involving 1,015 participants with AGA matched to controls. The analysis reveals that AGA is significantly associated with hyperlipidemia in both men (adjusted OR 2.32) and women (2.55). Additionally, AGA is independently associated with obesity in women (1.48), but not in men. The study suggests that AGA could serve as a clinical marker for cardiometabolic risk, particularly in women. However, the cross-sectional design limits causal inference.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
